Doug Kevilus and Ryan Lewis co-founded 2nd Amendment Firearms Academy to serve Bay Area concealed carry applicants with DOJ-certified instruction. Kevilus, a U.S. Army veteran, holds NRA Chief Range Officer and NROI Chief Range Officer credentials alongside NRA Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, and Personal Protection certifications, plus U.S. LawShield legal-use-of-force instructor status. Lewis brings POST Certified Pistol Instructor, USCCA Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals Instructor, and Red Dot Instructor certifications to live-fire qualifications. The academy maintains approval as a CCW training provider for over thirty Bay Area jurisdictions, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano, Sonoma, and Yolo counties, plus municipal departments from Concord, Fremont, Hayward, Walnut Creek, Novato, and West Sacramento. Sixteen-hour initial courses cost four hundred dollars and combine eight classroom hours covering California use-of-force law, conflict de-escalation, pre-attack indicators, and carry equipment with eight live-fire hours at outdoor ranges. Eight-hour renewals run two hundred fifty dollars with four classroom and four range hours. Every student receives proprietary e-books—including a thirty-day carry checklist, dry-fire training playbook, de-escalation guides, and legal-standard breakdowns—that extend instruction beyond minimum state requirements. Alumni gain exclusive access to advanced offerings: Dynamic Drill Day, low-light and no-light pistol sessions, Level 2 practical shooting, draw and drill tune-ups, and private coaching. The academy emphasizes adult learning principles, stress-based decision-making, and practical defensive pistol skills rather than competitive sport techniques. Kevilus designed the curriculum with a focus on ability-opportunity-jeopardy assessments, reasonable person standards, disparity of force, proportionality, and aftermath protocols, preparing everyday carriers to recognize threats early and avoid ego-driven mistakes.
